The exhibition explores the history of the independent women's movement in the GDR from an intersectional perspective – a previously largely marginalized chapter of East German contemporary and cultural history.

Four thematic chapters illuminate the genesis, plurality, and social impact of this movement: from grassroots democratic initiatives of the 1980s to feminist critiques of state and church to political visibility during the period of upheaval in 1989/90.

At the opening, Dr. Marie Anne Subklew-Jeutner will give a keynote lecture entitled "I Became Courageous." Biographical approaches to political self-assertion and public dissent among women in East Berlin.
