From a flower meadow to a railway yard, from the “Chicago of Berlin” to a variety theatre, from a fiercely contested battleground in May 1945 to what was then Europe’s most modern and largest press complex, from the turmoil of reunification to a fully utilised office and conference centre – Franz-Mehring-Platz and its surroundings have a chequered history.
This history is reflected in the old and new names of the streets in this area. It finds expression in literature and in films.
Spring 2022 marked the 50th anniversary of the renaming of Küstriner Platz to Franz-Mehring-Platz – as well as the arrival of the daily newspaper Neues Deutschland. A double anniversary that we took as an opportunity to take a fresh look at the eventful history of this place. The result is an expanded edition of the book published in 2012, ‘Railwaymen, Artists and Newspapermakers: On the History of the Former Küstrin Railway Station’.
You are warmly invited to rediscover the history of this place. Over the coming weeks and months, we will be hosting discussion and film evenings. During these events, we will explore topics that could not be covered in detail, or at all, in the book.
To kick things off, the book will be presented and we will be talking to the author and politician Sven Heinemann about Berlin’s railway history. The expansion of the railway system in Prussia laid the foundations for Berlin’s industrialisation. It connected the city’s iron-processing industry, enabled the transport of people and goods, and drove Berlin’s growth. Heinemann will shed light on these and other aspects in a talk, illustrated with rare photographic and video material.
Admission is free. Due to limited seating, please register at https://pretix.eu/Muenzenberg/eisenbahngeschichte/
