In 1685, the Great Elector of Brandenburg opened his doors to persecuted French Huguenots. They were given land, work, and freedom of religion, and they continue to shape our culture to this day. Swiss, Dutch, Salzburgers, and Bohemians also settled here.
After the Thirty Years’ War, tolerance and diversity were thus combined with economic benefits—even if the newcomers were not welcome everywhere.
