The rewetting dilemma

What was once cultivated and thus significantly altered is now a beacon of hope: the moor. Moors are among the most effective natural CO₂ stores – but only if they have enough water.

Rewetting them is therefore an important measure against climate change. But it's not that simple: many other interests conflict with them. They will discuss with you how they can find solutions for the moor landscapes of the future.

Although moors cover only 3 percent of the world's land area, they store more carbon than all forests combined. This makes them an important contribution to climate protection. In Germany, however, 95 percent of moors have been drained over the past few centuries for agricultural and forestry use or for development.

Rewetting part of these areas is therefore a key measure to protect the climate. At the same time, valuable habitats are restored, nutrients remain in the soil, and water is retained in the landscape.

Rewetting not only brings about ecological changes, but also profound changes in land use, particularly for agriculture. The experts will discuss the various interests of nature conservation, agriculture, and local residents.

Do the benefits for climate, water balance, and biodiversity conflict with food security, economic interests, and the preservation of cultural landscapes? How can peatlands continue to be used for agriculture? And what political decisions do people need to make to find sustainable solutions for peatland landscapes of the future?
