How does a society in exile remember? The protests in Belarus in 2020/21 have revealed political and cultural ruptures in memory. Memories of World War II, the 75th anniversary of whose end was marked in 2020, played an important role in this. Alongside the state's historical policy, a new space for remembrance is emerging in exile – free from censorship, but marked by uprootedness. This event highlights how Belarusians in exile at the Free Belarus Museum in Warsaw link history and the present and understand memory as a form of civil resistance.
The Free Belarus Museum in Warsaw was founded in 2022 by representatives of Belarusian civil society in exile. It preserves objects, documents, and personal testimonies from the protest movement and makes them accessible to the public. Funded by donations and international partners, the museum shows how Belarusians in exile are reinterpreting history and preserving their cultural identity.
The event focuses on the tension between the past and the present. It asks, on the one hand, about forms of remembrance and storytelling that have emerged in Belarusian exile since the protests of 2020 and, on the other hand, how memory acts as civil resistance and what new narratives are emerging beyond state historical policy.
