As court painter to Charles V of Spain, Titian was ennobled in 1533. However, he retained the privilege of continuing to reside in Venice. His portrait in old age, on display in the Gemäldegalerie, bears witness to a self-confidence that is hard to surpass—a confidence shaped not least by the great acclaim he received during his lifetime.
