Father, mother, child? Surprising perspectives on the traditional family model in the past and present.

Under the title "Relationships in Family," numerous cultural institutions of the Humboldt Forum are participating in a joint theme year. The Knoblauchhaus Museum in the Nikolaiviertel is also presenting an exhibition of the same name, exploring family life from the 19th century to the present day.

Family represents support and rules, closeness and conflict, tradition and change. But what does it actually mean to be related – love or a burden, freedom or coercion? Through thematic stations, the exhibition explores the bourgeois family model, presenting table manners, family trees, violence, and experiences of migration.

One highlight is an album by a Berlin Biedermeier woman (1838–1860), exhibited for the first time. The drawings of young women are reminiscent of modern selfies – evidence that they wanted far more than just waiting for the "man of their life."

The "Relationships in Family" project is a collaboration between the Humboldt Forum Foundation, the Berlin State Museums, the Berlin City Museum Foundation, and Humboldt University. It includes special exhibitions, themed islands and a diverse event program.
