Discussion on Democracy Day

How can democratic cooperation work when social debates are increasingly marked by polarization? On International Democracy Day, a panel discussion invites participants to talk about how to deal with differing opinions, experiences, and perspectives—and how differences can nonetheless lead to collective action.

With the Berlin House of Representatives election just five days away, the focus is particularly on urban society: What does increasing polarization mean for living together in Berlin? How can people with different political and personal backgrounds continue to engage in dialogue without differences automatically leading to division? And what forms of dialogue and cooperation are needed to strengthen social cohesion?

Academic insights will be combined with concrete examples from Berlin’s real-world context. Together, participants will discuss where the challenges lie, what experiences have already been gained, and which strategies can help maintain dialogue even in tense times. The evening will blend analysis and practical experience with a look at possible future prospects for a democratic and diverse urban society.

To conclude, a get-together at Café Urania offers an opportunity to continue the conversations in a relaxed atmosphere over drinks and snacks and to engage with one another.
