Peritoneal cancer can originate in various organs of the abdominal cavity, such as the intestines, stomach, liver, pancreas, and ovaries. In addition, there are primary tumors of the peritoneum. In peritoneal carcinomatosis, cancer cells spread throughout the abdominal cavity and can settle on the peritoneum. This represents an advanced stage of the disease and was long considered virtually untreatable.
