Artist Tour with Stelios Kallinikou

Akrotiri is a British Sovereign Base Area housing a Royal Air Force airbase. At the same time, it is home to Lake Akrotiri, the island’s largest natural inland body of water and an important wetland for migratory birds. Kallinikou’s photographs reveal the coexistence of nature and military infrastructure, highlighting how the military base shapes perceptions of and access to the site.

Stelios Kallinikou (b. 1985, Cyprus) is a visual artist whose works unfold through photography, video and sound, creating introspective worlds that explore the intersections of politics, colonialism, the environment, technology, spirituality and the power of images. His speculative narratives question land and the body as both territorial and ideological constructs. He is co-founder and director of the Thkio Ppalies Project Space in Nicosia, Cyprus, where he lives and works. His works have been exhibited widely, including at Foam (Amsterdam), Künstlerhaus Bethanien (Berlin), NiMAC (Nicosia) and the Benaki Museum (Athens), and have been shown at major biennials and in key institutions such as the Ural Industrial Biennial and the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
