She is queen, mother, intercessor, and ideal—hardly any other figure in art history has been portrayed in such a variety of ways as the Virgin Mary.

In the Gemäldegalerie, visitors encounter her images in countless variations: solemn and sublime, tender and human.

This lecture series invites you to discover this fascinating visual world. Familiar patterns and iconographic types become apparent, as do moments when artists broke new ground. It becomes clear just how deeply the history of faith, art, and human emotion is reflected in depictions of the Madonna.
