Under cover of darkness. In transit. In the trunk of a car. In an empty child's bedroom. On a passport. Stored in smells, objects, letters, photo albums. Between hope and fear, farewell and new beginnings.
Every family writes its own story. In one, a mother leaves her daughter and husband and secretly flees to her childhood sweetheart. For them, the separation comes suddenly, without a goodbye. In another, an exit visa application is followed by a long wait—four years of stagnation between hope, harassment, and the yearning for freedom.
Splitter searches the fault lines between past and present, between East and West Germany, for personal stories—memories, biographies, and decisions of parents and grandparents that continue to resonate today.
The ensemble's devised piece tells of political pressure, personal responsibility, love, loss, the search for freedom, and one's place in the world.
And it asks: what has to happen for you to say, "I'm leaving," and what is it like to stay?
