A project by Slovenian artist JAŠA
Internationally renowned Slovenian artist JAŠA (Mrevlje-Pollak) announces ‘The Monuments | Chapter 16 | Poetic Justice’ – a critical site-specific installation and long-duration performance (6–10 p.m.) that will take place at Kühlhaus Berlin on 6 February 2026. This event marks the beginning of the final phase of the four-year long-term project ‘The Monuments’, which will conclude in May 2026.
Poetic Justice is the ultimate expression of the artistic attitude of JAŠA, who has spent four years translating his conceptual commitment into a definitive, indisputable act. The core message of this work is that art not only comments on reality, but actively shapes it. This chapter rejects the role of the passive observer and asserts that the only true justice that can be achieved through art is the creation of a sublime, ephemeral reality based on vulnerability and mutual care.
‘For me, Poetic Justice is not a happy ending; it is a radical presence. It is the moment where the artist stops negotiating and starts creating an unavoidable reality. It is the act of meeting a non-symmetric world, face on; with gestures of generosity and attitude. It is the justice of the skin, the heart, and the imagination—demanding that we be defined by what we create, not by what we fear.’
Launched in 2021, the project has intensively explored space as a medium and context. After representing Slovenia at the Venice Biennale in 2015, JAŠA expanded this foundation into a methodology defined by immersive, site-specific interventions and long-duration performances.
In a huge space covering three entire floors of Berlin's Kühlhaus, visitors are invited not only to witness the event, but to become part of a unique experience. By addressing each individual on the one hand and encouraging them to walk through a staged, extensive exhibition of paintings, installations, videos and sound works on the other, viewers are immersed in a defragmented script. Like a detective, everyone is invited to help create their own ‘emotional soundtrack,’ absorbing and developing inspiration.
While visitors are free to move between floors and interact with the various artworks and performers, the ongoing performance takes place on the first floor in three consecutive loops.
