The Spree flows through East and West Berlin, and no wall can stop it. That’s why twelve-year-old Matze from East Berlin thinks his message in a bottle must drift at least as far as Africa.

But Lika, from the Wedding neighborhood in West Berlin, fishes it out of the Spree and promptly writes back to Matze. Matze is very surprised when he receives a letter from the part of the city that feels like a foreign country to him. The parents are not at all pleased with the contact between the two children, because ties to the West can be harmful to East Berliners, and Lika’s parents also have many reservations. Will the two manage to meet despite all the obstacles?
On the eve of German Unity Day, the play “Die Flaschenpost” (The Message in a Bottle), based on Klaus Kordon’s story, will be performed, set in Berlin in the 1980s.
Following the performance, there will be a film screening on the theme of East-West relations and the fall of the Wall, accompanied by music from that era of upheaval.
An intergenerational evening for discussion, reflection, and remembrance: about the real Wall (and the one in our minds), family stories from East and West, and a city where traces of the division of Germany can still be found.
