In Berlin, memorials and commemorative sites are a recurring feature. This walking tour will focus on two forms of these: firstly, the memorial plaques, installed since 1987 in preparation for the city's 750th anniversary, at the residences and places of work of individuals, as well as the institutions and events associated with them.
Secondly, there are the Stolpersteine (stumbling stones), laid since 2000, which concentrate attention on the period of National Socialism, a time often overlooked and consciously forgotten: the victims of persecution for a variety of reasons. In Berlin, there are over 9,000 of these stones, placed directly in front of the houses where people lived before they were persecuted.
This project is the world's largest decentralized memorial against forgetting an unprecedented system of hatred and annihilation.
Participants will begin their walks at the Adenauer Memorial and discuss several sites along the Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm) and neighboring streets.
Stolpersteine are laid in Berlin in a highly concentrated manner, focusing on the history of the Nazi era, a period often overlooked and consciously forgotten.
