C/O Berlin presents the first major retrospective of Graciela Iturbide’s (b. 1942) work in Berlin, offering an in-depth exploration of one of Mexico’s most significant photographers. Developed in close collaboration with the artist, the exhibition features her iconic series as well as works never seen before, presenting an overview of more than five decades of her oeuvre.
Iturbide documents Mexican culture and illuminates the role of women across many contexts. These include women-led Zapotec communities in Juchitán, Oaxaca which dispense with gender stereotypes, as well as her examination of Frida Kahlo and her Casa Azul, which transcend myths surrounding the artist’s life.
Her other central groups of work look at the indigenous Seri community in northwestern Mexico, the La Matanza ritual performed in the Mixteca region, as well as seldom-shown photographs taken on travels in India and Bangladesh. While her work often chronicles the people and cultures on which she has chosen to focus, her poetic sensibility inspires a more transcendent perspective than pure documentation.
The retrospective captures how her unique photographic practice has evolved, resonating far beyond Mexico itself.
