The walk leads to bridge piers, underpasses beneath dirt roads, and other remnants of the never-completed Bad Hersfeld–Würzburg section of the Reichsautobahn, which was intended to serve as an alternative to the landscape-destroying railroad by winding as much as possible through “German nature.”

With Martin Baumert, research associate for the exhibition “Nature and German History,” and Nils M. Franke, environmental historian specializing in nature conservation under National Socialism.

DHM Off-Site

Out of the Museum: The exhibition program takes place outdoors on five dates. During approximately two-hour walks, members of the team will explore specific themes on-site with external guests: along highway ruins and vineyards, man-made lakes, and castle gardens.
