A Discussion with Hamza Walker

The Neue Nationalgalerie is pleased to welcome curator and author Hamza Walker in collaboration with the American Academy in Berlin. The discussion will focus, among other things, on the highly acclaimed exhibition MONUMENTS, which was on view until a few weeks ago at MOCA and The Brick in Los Angeles.

In addition to specific insights into the exhibition, the discussion will also address broader questions regarding the political role of monumental sculptures and the role that contemporary art can play in engaging with such issues.

The exhibition MONUMENTS, co-curated by Hamza Walker, Bennett Simpson, and Kara Walker, presented public sculptures outside their original urban contexts and in various stages of transformation. Public monuments were thus not viewed as fixed historical symbols, but as contested objects shaped by political conflicts and a shifting historical consciousness. These decommissioned monuments were further placed in dialogue with contemporary artworks by artists such as Bethany Collins, Stan Douglas, Cauleen Smith, and Kara Walker to facilitate reflection on the future of the tension between sculpture and political consciousness.

A collaboration between the Neue Nationalgalerie and the American Academy in Berlin.
