Shu and Frieda
The Mani is an experimental performance and sound research project by the artist duo Shu and Frieda. It explores how language is shaped, preserved, and transformed as a cultural product. At the heart of the project is the Cantonese romantic pop ballad of the 1990s—a genre closely linked to identity, nostalgia, and migration. Its resonance is traced through two distinct biographical paths: Shu, born in Taiwan in 1995, and Frieda, born in Hong Kong in 1992.
By transforming language from an oral tradition into an unstable, reworked soundscape, *The Mani* makes the internal tensions of cultural assimilation and memory audible. The project views the body and its expressions not as static archives, but as sites of ongoing negotiation and change.
