Günter Papendell sings Schumann, Schubert and Vaughan Williams

For almost twenty years, the unmistakable baritone voice of Günter Papendell has been a defining presence in the ensemble of the Komische Oper Berlin. With the concert evening “Die Erde still geküsst” (“The Earth Softly Kissed”), he returns for the first time in many years to his passion for art song (Lied) and can be experienced at the Kulturhaus Schwartzsche Villa.

Together with the acclaimed Canadian pianist Erika Switzer, the Berlin Kammersänger Günter Papendell presents a program featuring three major composers of the Lied tradition:

Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Alongside Schumann’s style-defining cycle Liederkreis, the program includes Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel as well as excerpts from Schubert’s Schwanengesang.

A song recital about loss and longing, featuring the timeless poetry of Ludwig Rellstab, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Joseph von Eichendorff—whose texts, despite their Romantic worldview, almost always carry a deeply rooted sense of hope.

Programme

  • Robert Schumann (1810–1856): Liederkreis, Op. 39
  • Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958): Songs of Travel
  • Franz Schubert (1797–1828): Schwanengesang, D 957 (excerpts)

Performers

  • Günter Papendell, baritone
