Lecture series on the art history of the Tiergarten district

“In the charming rooms of Mrs. von Bayer, mannequins showcase the latest designs,” Julie Elias gushed in 1928 about the charismatic fashion designer Olga de Bayer.

With 100,000 gold marks and the support of artist Emil Orlik, the beautiful “Ollyne” had opened her salon in Berlin’s Tiergarten district in 1921. Elias celebrated her as a “master born for the fashion trade.” The creative baroness’s trademarks were elegant dresses, cape coats, and modern fabrics with surprising details.

As a star of the Berlin fashion world, she was known as far away as America. “A German Baroness designs in Extreme Versions of the Coat Mode,” was the headline there. But who was this woman? What networks and biographical secrets can still be discovered today behind her success?

Speaker: Dr. Gesa Kessemeier, fashion and contemporary historian, led the research project “The Art History(ies) of the Tiergarten District” at the Kunstbibliothek Berlin from 2022 to 2025. In 2025, after ten years of research, her book “Modestadt Berlin” was published.
