From 1815 until his death in 1822, the judge, poet, and composer E. T. A. Hoffmann made his home in the vicinity of what is now the Mendelssohn Remise.
His opera "Undine" was performed at the theater on Gendarmenmarkt, and he spent his nights drinking in the local taverns. Hoffmann captured the social life of the time in caricatures and stories. His satires on contemporary social life were also read with amusement by the Mendelssohn family. Wilhelm Hensel, the future husband of Fanny Mendelssohn, even became a literary character in one of Hoffmann's ghost stories.
