With free admission to the exhibition

On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, the Gropius Bau celebrates the opening of the exhibition Peter Hujar / Liz Deschenes: Persistence of Vision, which marks the start of the 2026 exhibition program. Admission is free that evening, and a DJ set will provide musical accompaniment.

The exhibition Persistence of Vision brings together the work of Peter Hujar and Liz Deschenes, placing them in an intergenerational dialogue about photography. Hujar, who worked in New York City between the Stonewall riots of 1969 and the outbreak of the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, captured a pivotal cultural period in striking black-and-white photographs. Alongside poignant images of animals, nature, and decaying buildings, he portrayed the queer and avant-garde communities of Lower Manhattan, including figures such as Candy Darling, Susan Sontag, and David Wojnarowicz.

The exhibition Persistence of Vision brings together the work of Peter Hujar and Liz Deschenes, placing them in an intergenerational dialogue about photography. As the first major exhibition of works by Hujar and Deschenes in Berlin, it articulates a broader understanding of photography and highlights the uncompromising clarity of vision that unites the practice of both artists.

Free admission to the exhibition.
