250 years of E.T.A. Hoffmann: The musician, composer, conductor, illustrator and lawyer was regarded as an exceptional talent even during his lifetime. In his fairy tales, novels, fantasy pieces and (spooky) stories, the boundaries between dream and reality dissolve.

Several of his works have been adapted for the screen.
In 1955, for instance, one of DEFA’s most lavish productions was made, based on Hoffmann’s crime novella of the same name.
As the West German side refused to collaborate with the East German DEFA during the Cold War, the West German production set up a front company with the Swedish Pandora Film. West German director Eugen York assembled an international cast around former UFA star Henny Porten in her final role.
About the film: During the reign of the Sun King, Louis XIV, a series of mysterious murders rocks Paris. All the victims were wearing jewellery by the renowned goldsmith Cardillac. The trail soon leads to his apprentice, who is engaged to his daughter. But is he the murderer? The 70-year-old Miss von Scuderie investigates on her own initiative.
