The five tours, featuring 33 objects drawn from the entire collection, offer insights into the artistic and social engagement with LGBTIQ* (from English: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer) sexualities and identities, which have always been present in art but have received little attention.
LGBTIQ* in the Context of Past Eras
It will also become clear that society’s approach to LGBTIQ* issues has not followed a linear trajectory, but has varied across different eras and social contexts. For example, the liberal attitude toward (male) homosexuality that prevailed in antiquity was reversed in the Christian Middle Ages, which viewed the heterosexual couple as the nucleus of the Christian faith.
