Köpenick, with its location between forest and water, was a popular destination in East Berlin - and home to tens of thousands of people. From 1971 onwards, the Salvador Allende Quarter was built, a large housing estate in prefabricated slab construction. The district became famous because of the Captain of Köpenick.
What is less well known: on a steamboat trip to the "Rübezahl" excursion pub on Müggelsee, the construction workers from Stalinallee agreed on the general strike for Berlin in the run-up to 17 June 1953.
