A hands-on workshop evening as part of the “Solidarity in Diversity” event day.

  • May 21, 2026, 6–9 p.m. at the historic printing workshop in the FHXB Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Museum

Letterpress printing brings people together—across borders and languages. To mark UNESCO World Day for Cultural Diversity, participants will let the letters speak: Everyone is invited to print together in German and Turkish. They’ll use historic type cases from the 1950s that tell their own stories. Why are certain Turkish characters missing from the former Kreuzberg printing shop, which is now housed in the museum? Together, participants will creatively fill these gaps and craft their messages for a culturally diverse society. Come by, make a statement, and join in the printing!

The evening is organized by the Verein für die Schwarze Kunst e.V. and is open to anyone interested in experiencing hand typesetting and letterpress printing—and thus the diversity of typefaces and their history—in a hands-on way. You can take your creation home as a souvenir.

The evening will be led by:

Anne König, a letterpress printer and printing engineer, regularly offers insights into the history of the workshop and the traditional methods of hand typesetting and letterpress printing, and is a board member of the Verein für die Schwarze Kunst.

Katharina Walter, typographer and cultural studies scholar and also a board member of the Verein für die Schwarze Kunst, conducts research on the history of typesetting. She loves working with others to keep letterpress printing alive.

Sener Abanozoglu, entrepreneur and lecturer at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences, supports the workshop as a member of the German-Turkish community with his ideas and enthusiasm for linguistic diversity.
