The source is not a place on a map, but a state of mind. It cannot be destroyed, only forgotten. Ayaz Ishaki's stories and this production are like a bridge between generations. They bring the voices of the past into the present and pose the questions that move us today. They remind us: Whoever knows their origin, their source, will never lose themselves. Even in a world of constant change.
"A people who preserve their source will never dry up."
The Source is a production based on the stories of the Tatar writer Ayaz Ishaki. Ishaki's stories open a window into the everyday life of Tatars around the turn of the 20th century. With keen observation, he captures moments of daily life that at first glance seem insignificant.
But it is precisely these small details that reveal something: Whoever understands the cultural code of a people and its mentality through the stories of individuals comes closer to the great question of our time – how identity can be preserved in a changing world. That the renowned Tatar director Aidar Zabbarov is staging this play in Berlin is no coincidence. In a city where cultures, languages, and memories converge, themes like roots and collective memory take on a special significance.
Founding a theater company abroad and performing a play in Tatar is a near-historic event. "The Source" thus becomes a source of inspiration for other cultural minorities as well.
