In this performance, classical music meets the complex rhythms and harmonies of jazz. Ebert and Meyerhöfer have long been passionate about jazz standards, which they have frequently performed as encores in past concerts. This time, however, they aim to significantly expand their jazz repertoire.

In his Cello Sonata No. 2, the legendary Ukrainian composer Nikolai Kapustin combines classical forms with jazz harmonies. The final movement of Moritz Ebert’s sonata is also strongly inspired by Kapustin’s music.

About the two musicians

Moritz Ebert (cello) and Johannes Meyerhöfer (piano) have been performing as a duo since 2018. They integrate the principles of resonance theory into their playing to enable effortless musical expression and direct connection with the audience. Their repertoire includes masterpieces by the great classical composers as well as original compositions and contemporary works by rarely performed composers such as Nikolai Kapustin, Fazil Say, Reena Esmail, and Johannes Motschmann.

They also frequently supplement their programs with free and stylistic improvisations. The duo’s vision is to build bridges between different musical styles and genres in order to present a broader range of cello and piano music to a wider audience.

Ebert and Meyerhöfer have already performed at several festivals, including the “Sommerintermezzo Pirmasens” and the “Sommerkonzerte Melk,” and regularly perform at renowned cultural venues in Berlin, such as the “Schwartzsche Villa,” “Kulturhaus Centre Bagatelle,” and the “Mendelssohn Remise.”
