The sustainable charity shop "Second Hand in the City Club" in Berlin's The Playce shopping center at Potsdamer Platz is celebrating its one-year anniversary. What originally began as a three-month project has evolved into a successful platform for sustainable fashion, social engagement, and celebrity endorsements.

Since opening in April 2024, the store has been dedicated to secondhand fashion with added value, focusing on circular economy, fundraising, and celebrity collaborations.

Founder Ekaterina Inashvili has inspired celebrities such as Wladimir Kaminer, Motsi Mabuse, the Blue Man Group, and the Füchse Berlin (Spreefüxxe) for the project. Their donated clothing is sold in the store, and all proceeds go to charitable organizations such as Caritas, the Sonnenhof children's hospice, and aid projects for Ukrainian refugees.

The concept of resource exchange without subsidies is also unique: Customers receive credit for donated clothing – alternatively, a direct clothing exchange is possible. Over 6,000 items of clothing were donated free of charge in the first year.

The opening hours – Mon-Fri 12 p.m.–7 p.m., Sat 12 p.m.–6 p.m. – are managed by volunteers.

The fourth celebrity collaboration began in spring 2025 with voice actor Santiago Ziesmer, the German voice of SpongeBob SquarePants, whose donated clothing is currently available in the shop. Proceeds from the sale go to Kinderschutzengel e.V. (Child Protection Angels) – a fan meeting with a signing session will conclude the campaign at the end of July.

"Second Hand in the City" combines sustainability, social awareness, and celebrity support – a showcase project for second-hand fashion in Berlin that demonstrates how fashion, responsibility, and commitment can be successfully combined.
