Tracing the origins of parliamentary democracy in the Mitte district of Berlin

To mark the International Day of Democracy, being celebrated for the first time this year under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Mitte Museum invites you to Pankstraße 47.

Here, in 1921, the first municipal parliament of the Wedding district convened. Women, like men, had gained the right to vote in 1918. Historian Heike Stange will speak about these beginnings of political activism at this authentic location. She is particularly interested in the life stories of women who fought for democracy, freedom, and justice.

Who were these pioneers? How did they exert influence? How do people remember them today? Her keynote address will encourage discussion about political participation today.
