On the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini's death: An Italian opera evening - played by mechanical musical instruments and shellac records.

November 29, 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of the composer Giacomo Puccini. His death marked the end of the glorious era of Italian opera. His popularity as an artist was extraordinary; in 1924, the New York Times called him probably the "greatest European." His works are still part of the repertoire of opera houses all over the world.

Italian opera had already achieved world fame with the works of Giuseppe Verdi. Many of the catchy melodies from the operas of Italian composers, including Puccini's contemporaries Ruggero Leoncavallo and Pietro Mascagni, became real evergreens. They were often arranged for mechanical musical instruments around 1900, before records could reproduce authentic recordings.

With shellac records, arrangements for mechanical musical instruments and selected texts, the event aims to commemorate this glorious era.
