The motto of the 104th Annual Meeting of the German Society for Pathology in Berlin "Our Immune System - the State within the State" refers to the leitmotif of this congress. This multifunctional cell system is built up in youth, gets to know the world, optimizes itself with enormous effort, tolerates the self and fights against the non-self.
Our lymphatic system is almost ubiquitously present and lies "in wait", constantly ready to become active and initiate a complex immune reaction that can be fatal on a cellular level, leaving traces in the form of highly affine antibodies that make us immune to attacks from the microbiome, and memory cells that remain from clones that have been successfully active for us before. In every field of pathology, immune diseases are common, and this year's conference will focus on them.
