The artist Gerhard Richter (born 9 February 1932 in Dresden) has permanently donated over 100 works to the Neue Nationalgalerie. The works reflect the great diversity of his artistic output, ranging from paintings created using traditional techniques with brushes or squeegees to entirely different forms of artistic expression.

From the very beginning, Gerhard Richter has always used other materials and techniques alongside canvas and paint. For example, he drew on photographs, using them as models for his motifs or, in turn, painting over them with colour. Glass, in particular, represents an important element in his art. The world is reflected in the transparent surface as if in a window. Depending on the arrangement, format or colouring, entirely unique visual worlds emerge.
At the heart of the current exhibition is the installation ‘6 Standing Panes’ (2002/2011). The towering glass panes create a fascinating interplay between transparency and reflection, challenging us to re-experience our own position within the space. The work is constantly transformed by light, movement and perspective. It invites us to reflect further on the relationship between visibility and reality.
