In his operas, Richard Strauss uniquely combined word and music: singing and speech merge into a unified whole, shaping musical-dramatic situations with precision and wit.

This so-called "Straussian parlando" is the focus of a matinee in the Apollo Hall, where General Music Director Christian Thielemann, in conversation with Detlef Giese, will explain the special characteristics of this phenomenon using musical examples.

Four outstanding singers from the current production of *Die schweigsame Frau* (The Silent Woman) will illustrate parlando with selected scenes from the opera, whose impact arises from both linguistic precision and musical sophistication.

  • Duration: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
