Most recently, Swiss-born and Vienna-based musician David Howald drew attention as the driving force behind the avant-rock formation Werckmeister. In early 2026, he will release Der Narr, his first solo album in German.

Support came from Stuttgart sound guru Ralv Milberg (Die Nerven, Friends of Gas). Behind these nine intimate songs—performed quietly and with a sense of fragility—you can repeatedly sense something like the skeleton of deep, dark soundscapes.
Howald’s lyrics are no less evocative, drawing listeners into vivid inner worlds where the personal and the universal merge effortlessly. Musically, what might be described as a kind of post-folk framed by ambient textures finds its own place somewhere between Vic Chesnutt, PJ Harvey, and the quieter works of Einstürzende Neubauten.
