Vernesa Berbo & Tajna Veza Collectiv
In the Balkans, a “White Widow” is the term for a woman whose lover has been missing for a long time. For centuries, women have seen their husbands, sons, brothers, and fathers off to war; for centuries, they have waited in vain for their return.
For centuries, they have sung about it. The most beautiful women’s songs of the Balkans speak loudly and with self-determination of waiting, female strength, and the longing for the one who never returned. These songs are a feminist counterpoint and a powerful canon of remembrance culture from a female perspective.
Centuries-old songs meet jazz, soul, and slivovitz.
