The exhibition and event project Voicing Bethanien takes the 50th anniversary as an opportunity to take a look at the eventful past of the Kreuzberg and Berlin cultural venue.
The cross-room video installation by artist Sonya Schönberger consists of forty interviews with people who have shaped and are currently shaping this place and who talk about their memories and, above all, their lives.
In the now 50-year history of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien, numerous people and narratives have come together there.
The exhibition "Vocing Bethanien"
Schönberger's focus on individual life stories as well as her personal connection to the city of Berlin provide the framework for this collection of interviews. It is a continuation of her video archive Berliner Zimmer and this time takes the Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien as the starting point for the project in terms of content.
In five chapters, individual video works are placed in relation to each other in terms of content and thus enter into an exchange with each other. In this way, a polyphonic narrative about living and working together in the district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and the city of Berlin emerges from the individual biographies, which simultaneously negotiates social ruptures, problems and grievances, as well as celebrating moments and structures of neighborhood and solidarity, and the will for change.
The forty interviews conducted especially for the exhibition will be on view in the rooms of Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien until the final exhibition on November 05, 2023.
