“In dulci jubilo“ - Advent and Christmas carols of the Middle Ages

The Christmas story is musically told from the annunciation of the angel Gabriel to the birth of Jesus: Songs from the 13th to 15th centuries from England, France, and Germany are presented with varied instrumental accompaniment including the sinfonia (hurdy-gurdy), the medieval bronze glockenspiel, dulce melos (dulcimer), fiddle, harp, and flutes. These include early versions of today's "Christmas hits" such as "In dulci jubilo" and "Es kumpt ein schiff laden."

Boundless admiration and heartfelt joy run like a common thread through many of the medieval Christmas carols. The "Kindelwiegenlieder" even invited people to join in a round dance.
