Berlin from the perspective of Ukrainian refugees
Eighteen Jewish women and children pick up disposable cameras and document their view of Berlin - the city where they escaped from today's war in Ukraine.
Over 90 photographs show private Berlin moments and ask questions about Jewish visibility in the urban space. In the photographers' personal texts, their own understanding of terms such as flight, migration and evacuation becomes clear. In her work, processes of self-empowerment and self-accommodation become tangible – as strategies for participation in the city.
In the exhibition THROUGH OUR LENS, the photographers show their own perspectives on their situation. The exhibition offers an alternative beyond the media-spread images of suffering and destruction that shape the perception of Ukrainian refugees.
Visitors are also invited to participate in the shared cityscape – the mental map of Berlin.
The exhibition takes place in cooperation with Masorti e.V., an association for the promotion of Jewish education and life. The photographs were taken in October 2022, about six months after the authors fled to Berlin.
