Democracies are resilient – yet they are under pressure worldwide. A look at history reveals their fragility, and the example of the Weimar Republic illustrates the mechanisms of their failure. The writer Thomas Mann went a long way from being a detached observer to a committed democrat.

As early as 1930, Thomas Mann identified the dangers of National Socialism and publicly opposed the NSDAP – a courageous step that forced him into exile in 1933. From 1940 onwards, he addressed the German people in radio broadcasts from the United States in order to convince them of the evils of National Socialism.
