A magical opera for all ages

The year 2026 begins in Berlin with a magical opera premiere: Starting in February, Engelbert Humperdinck's fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel will be performed again at the Komische Oper in a production by Dagmar Manzel.

The stage will be transformed into a dense fairytale forest – featuring aerial acrobatics, dance numbers, a children's choir, and plenty of imagination.

Hansel and Gretel at a Glance

The Komische Oper is once again providing a magical start to the new year – with a lively new production of Engelbert Humperdinck's fairytale opera Hansel and Gretel. Actress and director Dagmar Manzel breathes her own unique, modern magic into the beloved story of the courageous siblings, creating an absolute gem in the Komische Oper's children's program.

She is supported by conductor Yi-Chen Lin, who masterfully brings Humperdinck's composition to life and provides the sonic backdrop for a stage design that transforms the Great Hall of the Schiller Theater into an imaginative fairytale forest. The perfect program for the whole family.

What makes Hansel and Gretel so special

To enhance the brilliant music, Dagmar Menzel's production incorporates aerial acrobatics into the performance. Aerial artist Paulin Raatz soars at dizzying heights, embodying the fantastic inhabitants of the fairytale forest.
The children's choir of the Komische Oper Berlin, consisting of around 100 singers between the ages of 6 and 16, accompanies Hansel and Gretel's adventures with their singing.
At performances of the Komische Oper Berlin, you can always count on a top-notch cast. This is also the case with Hansel and Gretel: With talented actors like Susan Zarrabi (Hansel), Alma Sadé (Gretel), and Daniel Kirch (The Gingerbread Witch), every performance becomes a unique experience.

The timeless story of Hansel and Gretel touches people of all ages – let yourself be enchanted with the whole family!

The Story Behind Hansel and Gretel

The Grimm fairy tale about the siblings Hansel and Gretel is everything: exciting, educational, and above all timeless. The children of a poor broom-making family are accustomed to harsh winters and meager meals – deprivation shapes their lives. But when they get lost in the forest after an argument with their parents, after a long wandering, they find a gingerbread house that promises to satisfy all their longings. Engelbert Humperdinck and his sister Adelheid Wette transformed the classic fairy tale into an opera in the 1880s, which is still popular with young and old today.
