An artist misunderstood by those around him, ahead of his time – no other opera by Richard Wagner reflects his own self-image and biography as directly as Tannhäuser.

In Kirsten Harms' production, striking medieval imagery comes to life, simultaneously raising timeless questions about identity, desire, and redemption.

About the Opera

After a period of sensuality in the Venusberg, the knight Tannhäuser returns to the courtly world of the Wartburg – driven by his longing for Elisabeth. But his relentless vision of a physically fulfilling love brings him to the social margins. When even repentance in Rome fails to bring forgiveness, everything turns to despair – until a miracle occurs.

Wagner's Tannhäuser is more than a conflict between physical desire and spiritual love. The opera explores central themes of the Romantic image of the artist: the contradiction between social recognition and artistic individualism, between desire and moral ideal, between guilt and redemption.

About the Production

Kirsten Harms illuminates the tension between Tannhäuser and Elisabeth – two figures struggling with inner conflict. In her interpretation, Elisabeth and Venus are two sides of the same woman – portrayed by a singer – who ultimately find unity. Tannhäuser and his serene counterpart Wolfram also reflect two sides of a torn personality.

Here, the Venusberg appears not as a place of vice, but as a symbolic space for longing and desire. Harms' production draws on the visual power of medieval manuscripts and combines them with contemporary reflection – a powerful interpretation that bridges history and the present.
