During his visit to Frederick II in 1747, Johann Sebastian Bach was asked by the regent to improvise on a theme he had suggested. Bach complied and later dedicated an entire collection of compositions to the king, including various works based on this theme—the "Musical Offering."
This tribute to the Prussian king was politically sensitive, as Bach thereby offended his own sovereign, the Elector of Saxony. The musical sections of the work, performed by Ensemble Continuum, alternate with texts reflecting on Bach's Prussian appearance from the perspective of his wife, Anna Magdalena. The reading is by Franziska Troegner, who herself played Anna Magdalena in the four-part television series "Johann Sebastian Bach" in 1985.
