In the mid-18th century, the viola da gamba was considered a noble but old-fashioned string instrument, no longer up to the demands of the modern orchestra.

However, during the reign of Frederick II, the viola da gamba experienced an extraordinary revival at the Prussian court, largely due to the masterful playing of court gamba player Ludwig Christian Hesse, who also inspired his colleagues in the court orchestra.

The two gamba players Heidi Gröger and Lea Rahel Bader, together with harpsichordist Flóra Fábri, present a representative selection from this Prussian repertoire.

  • Heidi Gröger, Lea Rahel Bader, viola da gamba | Flóra Fábri, harpsichord
  • Compositions by Ludwig Christian Hesse, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Christoph Schaffrath, Carl Friedrich Abel, Marin Marais, and Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe
