What emotions can music awaken that words alone cannot express? How many phases and facets can an intimate relationship between two people undergo? And what can peopletake from era-defining works such as Dichterliebe into our their lives?

The song recital “Heimliche Aufforderung” explores these questions with works by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and Richard Strauss. At the heart of the program is Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe, Op. 48, which traces the emotional journey of a love—from its first blossoming through betrayal, pain, and grief to eventual acceptance.

This central narrative is complemented by selected character pieces that make the musical and biographical network of relationships of the era audibly tangible. The recital concludes with songs by Richard Strauss, where late-Romantic tonal colors merge with passionate vitality—crowned by the title-giving “Heimliche Aufforderung.”

Baritone Felix Schulte (HMT) and pianist Daniel Popov (UdK) shape the evening as a cohesive musical narrative.
