Lecture and discussion with Prof. Dr. Gabriele Krone-Schmalz

There is an ice age between Russia and the West. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, already chilled relations have reached a historic low and appear irreparable in the long term. Nevertheless, a new European peace order that includes Russia is needed. The country is part of this continent.

How did things come to this after the East-West confrontation seemed to have been overcome at the end of the 1980s? How can the spiral of escalation be stopped? What role can diplomacy play? Will sanctions help? What about arms deliveries? What prospects are conceivable? How far is society willing to go in supporting Ukraine if this harms its own interests, both economically and with regard to peace?

All of these existential questions must be debated openly, respectfully, and fact-based in a democratically structured society.
