Bauhaus-director Walter Gropius originally planned the house
with the characteristic shed roofs.
The building at the Landwehrkanal
was used as a museum and archive building for four decades.

architectural firm Staab Architekten won the competition to extend the
museum and is currently realising their design: the striking glass
tower, spacious underground museum areas with an interior courtyard are
being connected to the building from the 1970s.
