New Poems and Backgrounds

Recently, the church historian Johann Anselm Steiger came across an unknown funeral poem that the hymn writer Paul Gerhardt (1607-1676) wrote for Hendrina Magdalena Seidel (1657-1662), who died at the age of five and was buried in St. Nicholas Church. Nothing else is known about the daughter of the lawyer and court judge Martin Friedrich Seidel (1621-1693).

Paul Gerhardt must have been in close private contact with the lawyer Seidel. The fact that the girl was buried in St. Nicholas Church is probably due to the fact that Seidel had a family grave there, in which he himself was buried in 1693. The poem is now being presented to the public for the first time.

Against the backdrop of the current special exhibition "Decolonial - What Remains?!" in the Nikolaikirche Museum, Paul Gerhardt's time will also be placed in the context of the global colonial and slavery history of the city of Berlin.
