Reading & discussion with Maya Rosa
In her debut novel Moscow Mule, Maya Rosa skilfully weaves politics with the urge for freedom that comes with growing up, using a unique voice full of wit and intelligence to show that joie de vivre can break many a social chain.
‘I just wanted to live, travel beyond all conceivable boundaries and roam freely along all roads.’ Karina and Tonya share everything — their studies at a Moscow university, drunk men, empty wallets, but above all: their goal of emigrating to Europe. While one part of Russian society wallows in luxury cars and caviar, the other struggles through life without means. Karina, too, has learned to master every situation with wit and madness. But more and more, her dreams are pushing her friendship with Tonya aside, and what once sounded like a grand ‘forever’ suddenly becomes fragile.
